Hello and welcome to our live coverage of 1st ODI: Sri Lanka v Bangladesh at Dambulla, Mar 25, 2017
Toss: Sri Lanka won the toss and elected to field
Hello, and welcome to ESPNcricinfo’s live coverage of the first ODI between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh in Dambulla.
Honours were shared in the preceding Test series, with Bangladesh wrapping up their landmark 100th Test with a four-wicket win in Colombo. It was a rare defeat for Sri Lanka at home, but one that was thoroughly earned by Bangladesh, who played some of their best cricket in recent years, with senior players and youngsters rising to the occasion alike.
But that was Test cricket. Now, it is time to switch over to the shorter format, where Bangladesh have been a different team over the last couple of years, starting with the 2015 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. If Bangladesh’s performances in the Test series are anything to go by, Sri Lanka are in for some challenge in this three-match series.
The defeat in the Tests means that the limited-overs series has assumed greater importance for the home team now, with plenty being written about their national team in the aftermath of the Colombo defeat.
Since 2015, Bangladesh have secured ODI series wins over India, Pakistan and South Africa, and they will look to add Sri Lanka to their impressive ODI streak. They did lose to England at home last year, but they have been a largely successful ODI side and will push Sri Lanka to their limit.
Quite the contrary have been Sri Lanka, whose ODI fortunes have been on the downswing, with series defeats to England, Australia, South Africa, Pakistan and New Zealand, twice against the last team in that list. They need to desperately stem that rot, and they could not find a better time to do that than at home. More on all that and how the two teams stack up in Andrew Fernando’s preview.
